Accessites Turns Two

Posted January 1st, 2008 by Team Access

It’s almost hard to believe we’ve been at this for two years but we have. We officially threw open the doors on January 1st, 2006 so the arithmetic fools us not. We have been surprised by the level of difficulty involved with this project. From the queuing of submissions, to the actual grading, to the correspondence after the fact. Trying to be fair and consistent, trying not to let first impressions influence us overly so, trying to be thorough… the work isn’t easy, and it all adds up pretty quick. We can easily spend hours dealing with one site. We think it’s a good cause, though, so we will press on.

We didn’t do this on our one year anniversary post, but what follows are our submission/rejections stats so far. What you won’t see this year is a list of Classic awards — we didn’t give any out, unfortunately.

  • Total Sites* Submitted: 345
  • Rejected Submissions: 241
  • Pending Grading: 7
  • Sites Graded: 97
  • Graded and Awarded: 76
  • Graded and Not Awarded: 21

* This includes legitimate submissions only.

To those who visit us and read what we write, we thank you for doing so. To those who comment on our articles, thank you for sharing your thoughts. To those who support us, mention us favorably, or link to us, we love you for that. And to those who think we’re full of crap, thank you, too, for not making too much of a stink about it. We truly believe we’re serving a useful and needed purpose that is to the benefit of web accessibility.

Happy New Year. Have a GR8-0H8!

Congratulations! Your cause is brilliant and you remain true to it. The amount of rejected submissions shows that we still need you to show us the way. I’ve only known of Accessites for six or seven months but you have really had an effect on my work as a student designer and developer. Thank you!

Congrats on your two year anniversary! I commend all of you for your dedication to promoting accessibility. I share your site with my fellow web professionals in our Refresh Detroit group and my classmates. Best wishes for 2008 and hopefully, several entries in the Classic awards list.

Belated Happy Birthday! Not wanting to sound all kiss-arse or anything, but this is one of the best accessibility sites around. I refer to it time and time again. Keep up the great work!
