I'm glad you mention about 404 error pages. Something I try to promote is good error pages and with most content management systems it is fairly simple to ensure that a 404 page has consistent navigation with the rest of the site, and includes a site map (and search box if applicable to the rest of the site), and of course the message needs to be appropriate i.e. helpful without being patronising or accusatory.</description>
