The average age of web users is going up every year. This technology didn’t enter the mainstream that long ago, relatively speaking, so this trend of increases of the average user’s age is understandable, natural, and to be expected for years to come.
As people get older their eyesight goes, manual dexterity lessens, failing concentration, and poorer short-term memory become more common. Larger text, to a degree, is easier to read. Higher contrast, also to a degree, is easier to see. Using a keyboard to navigate a site can become a preferred option. Accommodating these needs helps older users.
Why wait for your visitors to leave or stop visiting? Act now, before you’re informed — should you be so lucky — that your site is difficult to use. Don’t wait until your flow of visitors is reduced to a trickle and you have to hire a focus group to state the obvious.
